2017 was a dark year for the technology industry, dotted with cool new gadgets, predictable breakthroughs and spectacular failures.
What will 2018 bring?
Here are some of our predictions.
1. Virtual reality
It was assumed that virtual reality was going to take over the world.
But tie a pair of glasses to the head and watch video games or 360 videos is not what many expected.
In 2018 much of this technology could be massified with something you have at hand: your cell phone.
Augmented reality superimposes digital images on the real world, as seen through the camera on your phone.
Smartphones include a powerful AR technology so that anyone with a device fast enough can try it.
For example, with Apple's ARKit, iOS apps can map a room and use realistic and changing lighting to make their objects blend better with a scene.
2. Robots in the streets
The robots are going to take the streets.
No, we are not talking about an invasion.
Many companies already develop robots that circulate in hotels, hospitals, deliver mail or carry food door to door.
They use a combination of GPS, sensors and cameras to navigate the world.
But they have suffered problems: a security robot in San Francisco sent to evacuate homeless people who were around private property, was beaten and was found with human feces because of the anger of these people.
3. Smart homes that allow strangers to enter
You are not at home, but that does not mean that technology companies can not pass and leave your dinner order or a pack of 12 paper towels.
Amazon launched this strange category in early 2017 with a service that allows dispatchers to access your home through a special smart lock.
Expect more partnerships between delivery services and smart home technology during the next year.
4. Talking devices
Alexa fever has spread and most of the great tech players are working on their own voice aids.
More than intelligent speakers, they are developing talking cars and fish.
In 2018, companies like Amazon and Google will fight to lock you into a voice ecosystem.
After Google repeatedly banned Amazon from including YouTube in the Echo Show, Amazon finally relented and accepted Google's hardware.
There will be more clashes over services on voice platforms.
Before the end of the year, you may have to declare your allegiance to Alexa, Siri, Cortana or the Google Assistant.
5. Your internet charge could change
Most likely, you pay a fixed monthly fee for your Internet connection now.
Some companies charge different prices for faster or slower connections, but they do not limit what you can access.
The recent repeal of FCC's network neutrality rules has opened the door for Internet service providers to experiment with different pricing structures.
In theory, you could be charged more for a Netflix and Amazon Prime Video level, or social networks could be an additional monthly fee.
It is likely that any change starts small, as companies evaluate the reactions of customers and see if they flee to the competition (where there is).
6. Google wants you to experiment with photo apps
Most smartphone camera updates have focused on improving the actual camera, how to pack more pixels or a larger sensor in a limited space.
Now companies like Google are using computers to take photos to the next level.
The Pixel 2 smartphone is able to detect the outline of a subject and blur the background, and the company recently launched some small photography applications.
Expect great improvements in the appearance of your photos, such as less noise in low light and new fun tricks.
