God and science are not adversaries, as they exist on different axes, inhabit different planes, so to speak. God lives in the known+unreal quadrant of the universe. God is a thing.
Science is a process which discovers ideas from the unknown, and seeks to test them for unreality. Now, God is imaginary, makes him unreal, — but imagination is real! So science has tools, like psychology, and anthropology, to methodically study this phenomenon. Why do people make up gods? If we are ever to find out, the answer will probably involve some science.
For each person there is a “God” that represents the idealized projection of the individual, based on genetics, socialization, up-bringing, etc. For scientific types that ideal doesn’t exist outside of the imagination. If God is against this, he should speak clearly about it.
